Get Caught in the Act: Become a Literacy Model

When was the last time you were caught by your child? No...not that kind of caught. When was the last time you were caught reading? And we mean something other than Curious George Goes Camping.

May is “Get Caught Reading Month” – the perfect time to demonstrate to your child the importance of reading as part of everyday life. We’re going beyond the nighttime story ritual. We’re talking about your own personal reading rituals, with real, grownup books. Reading to yourself, reading for the joy of it. Remember that? Hopefully it’s not such a distant memory.

If you are a mom who loves reading, the moment your child catches that buzz is simply thrilling. But it shouldn’t be the only source of literary enjoyment in your life as a mom. In fact, according to reading advocates, one of the best ways to instill in your child a love of reading is to model good literary behavior. Read the newspaper each morning while your child eats breakfast. Curl up with a good book on a rainy day. Keep books in plain view throughout your home. Join a Charlotte Mommies Book Club.
